For the development of a question answering (QA) system with the QALL-ME Framework only free software should be needed. For most programs and tools that we mention below, there are alternatives which you may choose instead – just as you see fit. We are using the following software with which the development of QA systems in conjunction with the QALL-ME Framework has been tested and is known to work:

A JDK in at least version 5 is required and must be usable from the command line. We have good experiences with Sun’s JDK which is freely available for download from their website.
An application server is required to deploy and run your QA component web services. The GlassFish Application Server has proven to work well for us.
A web service testing tool is highly recommended, such as soapUI.
A Java web service API is required if you start to develop your own QA component web services. We are using JAX-WS here.
